L.L.T. 1824 - 1884
"Thou whom these eyes saw never: say friends true
who saw my soul, helped onward my song.
Through all unwittingly, has helped thee too?
I gave of but a little that I knew:
how were the gift requited. While along
life's path I pace, couldst thou make weakness strong:
help me with knowledge - for life's old, death's new."
Robert Browning to Levi Lincoln Thaxter, April 1885

Levi Thaxter was the husband of Celia Laighton Thaxter, the famous poet from the Isles of Shoals. She was sixteen when they married and he was her tutor.

Levi was an actor and was well known for his readings, especially of Robert Browning poems.

Celia wrote many poems, including Landlocked, The Sandpiper, Compensation, and many more. You can read her poem entitled A Kittery Churchyard online and more of her poems here.

She was also renown for her garden on Appledore Island in the Isles of Shoals. It has been restored and you can still visit it today.

Here is a painting of Celia Thaxter by Childe Hassam entitled Celia Thaxter in her garden.
