Dr. Theodore H. Jewett

Father of Sarah Orne Jewett, the famous American writer. The character of Doctor Leslie in her story, A Country Doctor, is based on him and their supportive relationship.

He practiced medicine in this home, now known as the Jewett-Eastman House.

He was professor of obstetrics and diseases of women and children in the medical department of Bowdoin, consulting surgeon to the Maine general hospital, surgeon of the first Maine district during the civil war, and president of the Maine medical society, and made many important contributions to current medical literature.
