Sarah Orne Jewett was published writer of fiction and ran in the literary circles of Mark Twain, Alfred Tennyson, Rudyard Kipling, John Greenleaf Whittier, Harriet Beecher Stowe, and Oliver Wendell Holmes to name a few. She is also the first woman ever to receive an honorary Doctor of Letters degree from Bowdoin College To read her work, you can visit the Sarah Orne Jewett Text Project, an attempt to make all of Jewett's published writings available online.
