His wife Ann Taylor Gilman is buried next to him.

In 1779, he inherited the Ladd-Gilman house in Exeter. He was a shipbuilder and merchant. The house at one time served his home and as the state treasury during the Revolutionary War when Nicholas became New Hampshire's first Treasurer. He was the father of Nicholas Gilman Jr., who was a delegate to the Constitutional Convention in 1786, John Taylor Gilman who was at one time Governor of New Hampshire.
