It was one of Joseph Gerrish's parishoners, Mary Herrick, that brought an accusation against the wife of the Rev. John Hale. She confessed this to Joseph Gerrish who relayed it to Hale. This caused Hale to finally oppose the trials. You can read the story of it here.

He was one of 11 ministers from Essex County who signed a petition against the Salem Witch Trials, fearing "that Innocent persons then suffered, and that God may have a controversy with the Land upon that account."

He married 2 daughters of Richard Waldron and had 4 wives total. You can read his entry here from Savage's Genealogical Dictionary of The First Settlers of New England.
